Deciding to start therapy can feel like a big step. Whether you’ve been thinking about it for a while or you’ve only recently started looking for a therapist in Brighton, it’s completely normal to feel nervous about that first session. Many people wonder what to say, what their therapist might be like, or whether they’ll “do it right.” The truth is – there’s no wrong way to start therapy.
A space to arrive, not perform
Your first session isn’t a test. It’s an opportunity for you to arrive, take a breath, and begin getting a feel for what therapy might be like. I’ll usually start by welcoming you, helping you settle in, and explaining a little about how I work. From there, you can share whatever feels comfortable – there’s no set script or expectation.
Some people come in with a clear idea of what they want to talk about. Others aren’t sure where to start, or they just know something doesn’t feel right. Both are completely fine. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin.
Understanding confidentiality and boundaries
We’ll also spend a bit of time talking about practical things like confidentiality, session length, and payment. These boundaries are what make therapy feel safe and consistent. It’s important that you feel you can ask questions about anything – whether that’s about how therapy works or what you might expect over time.
You set the pace
Person-centred therapy, the approach I practise, is about meeting you where you are. You don’t need to share everything straight away. Some clients begin with current challenges, others reflect on past experiences later on – there’s no “right” order. Our sessions move at your pace, guided by what feels most meaningful to you.
Feeling nervous is a good sign
It might sound strange, but feeling anxious or uncertain before your first session is often a sign that something important is happening. Therapy can be a brave act of self-care – a moment where you turn towards yourself rather than away. Those first nerves usually ease as you begin to experience what it’s like to be really listened to, without judgement or pressure.
Finding the right fit
The first session is also your chance to get a sense of whether I feel like the right therapist for you. Therapy works best when you feel safe and understood, so I always encourage clients to trust their instincts. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, that’s completely okay – finding someone who feels right matters most.
If you’re looking for affordable therapy in Brighton and you’d like to know more about how I work, please feel free to reach out and get in touch. I offer a low-cost service for people on lower incomes and students, and I’m always happy to answer questions before you book.
You don’t have to have the perfect words, a clear goal, or even know exactly why you’re coming. Just bring yourself – that’s always enough to begin.
